This Nutella brownie is a single serving treat that is easy to make and cooks in the microwave. It’s just like a chewy, fudgy brownie but flavored with chocolate and hazelnut spread.
If you’re still looking for a dessert to make for your loved ones this weekend, I recommend my Nutella Brownie Mug Cake. It’s just 3 ingredients and cooks in the microwave. I’ve shared this recipe before, but it’s so good, I wanted to send a reminder.
This mug cake is so fantastically easy and is always such a hit when I make it. It’s chewy, fudgy, Nutella-y. It’s sure to be a great ending toyour Valentine’s Day meal.
Don’t let the ramekins throw you off. You can’t actually make the desserts in the ramekins as the brownie rises about 2/3 in a 12 oz mug. The mug is ideal for mixing all the ingredients and for cooking the brownie. The one issue with this recipe is that it’s not the prettiest thing when it’s done. Unlike my traditional mug cakes, this doesn’t have a smooth cake surface. It actually looks quite blotchy and cracked when it’s finished. I actually did tinker with the recipe and made ones that looked prettier, but they just didn’t have that superchewy and fudgy texture anymore.
So I scooped it out and plated it in ramekins and topped with with some powdered sugar and strawberries to hide the imperfections. I may have eaten a couple bites from each brownie to make them fit into the ramekins. You know, for taste testing purposes.
Since I’mdoing a Valentine’s Day theme here, I adjusted this recipe to make two brownie cakes. And I attempted to top them with heart-shaped strawberries slices. (Side note.why is it that when you actually need heart-shaped strawberry slices, none of them are coming out that way and when you don”t need them, you get so many that are?)
If you really want to kick it up a notch, you can top it with ice cream and fudge sauce and make a whole brownie sundae out of it.
(P.S. If you enjoy this mug cake, it’s featured in my 5-Minute Mug Cakes book.)
Recipe now updated with video! Please note, I only made one brownie for the video but the recipe below is for two. You can easily make one by halving all the ingredients. You can find all my recipe videos on my youtube page.

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup + 2tbsp Nutella
- 1 largeegg gently whisked
- 4 tbsp all purpose flour
Instructions
The directions here are for making 2 mug cakes. You can easily halve the recipe if you just want to make one. Split the whisked egg evenly into two oversized microwave safe mugs (approximately 2 tbsp of whisked egg per mug). I used 12 oz mugs.
Add 1/4 cup + 1 tbsp of Nutella into each mug. Add 2 tbsp of flour into each mug. Mix with a sturdy whisk until batter is smooth. Batter will bevery thick, so you will need to exert some power in your whisking.
Microwave each mug separately for about 1 minute. Allow the brownie to cool slightly before eating. If you want an extra chewy brownie texture, allow the brownie to fully cool (about 20-30 minutes). For a nicer presentation, I recommend removing cake from mug and placing into a smaller plate or ramekin and then topping with powdered sugar, fruit, or ice cream on top.

Really good! I’m impressed how simple and efficient this recipe is. I put them only 30 seconds in the microwave though.

Can you also use wheat flour?

Kirbie — June 24, 2016 @ 11:07 pm Reply
I have not tried it with wheat flour. I imagine though, that the texture would be quite different.

My 11yo son asked if he could have a banana with some nutella. After he finished the banana I noticed he still had about 1/4 cup of nuttella in the bowl. (gross miscalculation on his part) So I looked this up and added 2 Tbsp flower and an egg white (whites=fluff, yolk=chew) and the result was fluffy and silky deliousness. Cheers!

I forgot to add the additional T of Nutella, oops. 🙂 but it still turned out delish! I might just leave that out every time, why mess up a good thing?

Kirbie — January 25, 2016 @ 10:37 am Reply
it’s more fudgy with the extra T of nutella but without it is good too!

I’m not sure how long to cook this, since I’ve tried your nutella mug cake (instead of brownie) and it took much longer than the indicated time. What should the brownie look like on top?
-
Kirbie — October 8, 2015 @ 7:44 pm Reply
the brownie should basically look like the photo, minus the strawberries. it will be crackly and the batter should be completely cooked.

I have a question, if I mixed the entire recipe( two servings) in one mug, would I have to double the cook time or leave it cooling any longer?
-
Kirbie — July 27, 2015 @ 12:21 am Reply
Hmm, i dont recommend you making it in one mug. It’ll be really hard to cook properly

Hi love the recipe! is it ok to use self raising or plain flour? Thank you! (big fan of you mug cakes)
-
Kirbie — June 1, 2015 @ 7:14 pm Reply
i would suggest try with plain flour. dont use self rising because this cake isn’t supposed to have a rising agent
